and minimize future repair costs has a seasonality to it.
To make it easier to stay on track and prepare your home for seasonal changes, follow this list of what to do throughout the coming year and when. Here are some quick tips about things to do after the thaw.
For the interior of the home, remove dryer vent lint with your vacuum cleaner. Check sinks, showers, and bathtubs to see if it's time to re-caulk. Put fresh batteries in all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Reverse ceiling fan blades to keep rooms comfortable in warmer weather. Test your sump pump before the rainy season gets underway.
For the exterior of the home, check gutters and downspouts for debris, especially if you live in an area prone to spring storms. Take a hard look at your roof, and replace loose, damaged, or missing shingles or tiles. Prune late bloomers while branches are bare of buds, prune early bloomers after first bloom. Renew or treat wooden siding, patio decks, and outdoor furniture. Clean windows and screens, and power wash siding and sidewalks. Rake any leftover remnants of fall, fertilize or repair any bare patches of grass. Schedule service on your air conditioner, and any catch basins and septic tanks. And, if you have outdoor play equipment, inspect it to make sure it remains level and secure.
