Edward Henry Corbould (1815 – 1905) was an accomplished British artist known for his watercolours and historical painting. So that there is no misunderstanding, historical painting (often now called history painting) is a genre that involves elaborate scenes from not only secular history, but also literature, religion, and mythology. The scenes often involve multiple figures in a dramatic scene from a story, so you could think of history painting as just story painting.
Born in London, he was son of Henry Corbould and grandson of Richard Corbould, both of whom were also painters. He became a student at the Royal Academy. He won many medals from the Society of the Arts, exhibited at the Royal Academy, and many of his paintings were eventually acquired by the royal family, including Queen Victoria. In 1842 he sold a painting to Albert, Prince Consort, and nine years later he was appointed instructor of historical painting to the Royal family, where he would remain for twenty one years.
